I first met Lamar Timmins at the Alexandraplatz Bar in Montreal's trendy Mile End neighbourhood, while I was visiting as a guest of Vélo Québec during the Go Bike Festival this past May. He and I had been interacting on social media for over a year, and finally met in-person at the Rendez-vous Cycle Chic, a cool little event sponsored by Montreal Cycle Chic (that included a screening of our own Cycle Chic Films). Lamar's passion for upright city cycling clearly rivalled that of my own, so the very next day, I decided to pedal along the Lachine Canal and stop in Allo Velo, the bike shop and cafe he owns on the west side of the city. Lamar made me an Americano and we chatted for almost an hour about the various high-end bikes (Gazelle, Creme Cycles, VANMOOF, etc.) he carries, and the difficult time he has keeping them in stock, especially during the summertime. I rode away so inspired by his shop, what it meant to the local community, and the support he was receiving from his family, that I decided to write a story about it for Momentum Magazine, which appeared in their Autumn 2014 issue.
Fortunately, Lamar’s mission to inspire a slower, simpler, more civilized bicycle culture extends far beyond the little island of Montreal. He recently re-branded and re-launched his website (velolifestyle.com), in order to showcase and sell his brands to the rest of the continent. He is the Canadian distributor of both Creme and Bullitt, and the North American distributor of trioBike. The latter of which we are all too familiar with, having test drove one of their "Mono" trikes when Copenhagenize's Mikael Colville-Andersen brought it into town for a few days in the summer of 2012. So when Lamar recently contacted Modacity about a promotional campaign for trioBike's brand new, two-wheeled "Cargo" model, we were all ears.
At first glance, the trioBike Cargo is a work of art - the perfect urban utility machine for transporting precious and not-so-precious goods alike. The alloy frame is shaped in one piece, without any welding points, providing a super strong, stiff, and lightweight (less than 50-lb.) cargo bike. It comes fully spec'd, including a Shimano Alfine 11 speed internal hub, Gates belt-drive, a roller brake, hydraulic disc brakes, adjustable seat post, adjustable stem extender, and kickstand. trioBike also offer some incredibly cool add-on options, including electric assist, bottom and side panels, a wind- and water-resistant hood, removable child's seat, and a sexy flight case box for business use and heavy loads. It is a cargo bike designed for the North American market: lightweight, low maintenance, and a very competitive price for quality Danish design and manufacturing.
For the first part of the campaign, Lamar will ride the trioBike across Canada from Montreal to Vancouver - an adventure he has been dreaming of his entire life. Armed with some basic camping gear and minor provisions, he will make the 4,700-kilometre journey over the next few weeks, documenting every step on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the Velo Lifestyle blog. Once the trioBike arrives in Vancouver, it officially becomes Modacity property, and we definitely plan on putting it through the wringer. We'll take it for camping weekends, beach barbecues, trips to school, grocery runs, and various other errands, sharing it all on social media, our blog, the Huffington Post, Momentum Magazine, Vancouver is Awesome, and the many other websites to which we contribute. We also have an innovative print and film campaign planned, in order to demonstrate how this bike truly is a game changer.
